5 Beautiful Lakes in Tennessee

Tennessee is home to many breathtaking locations and unique examples of flora and fauna. Serene Lakes dot the landscape to reflect the mystical Smokey Mountains and to provide cool and refreshing homes to many wild creatures. Center Hill Lake, Cherokee Lake, Chickamauga Lake, Dale Hollow Lake, Douglas Lake, J. Percy Priest Lake, Kentucky Lake, Norris Lake, Old Hickory Lake, South Holston Lake, Tim’s Ford Lake and Watts Bar Lake are some of the lakes which make up the bountiful lake system in Tennessee. Mostly man-made dams, these large lakes were originally built to serve a function and not intended for their beauty and charm. However, over the years, many of these stunning lakes have become backdrops for many posh and luxurious waterfront communities.

While all are beautiful and provide sanctuary for the animals of Tennessee, some stand out from the rest in terms of beauty, location, and function. Five of the most beautiful lakes in Tennessee include:

  • Watauga Lake is a reservoir nestled deep in the Appalachian Mountains. This lake, only accessible by remote, winding mountain roads, is clean and private. Property in this area is coveted because it is so scarce. Since the reservoir is between mountains, property is steep and space is limited. Although the lake itself is very large, only few homes can be built around it because of the challenging terrain.

  • Douglas Lake is a rare find if you are looking for cabin rentals. Because the Smoky Mountains are so steep and rugged, building on them is difficult. Douglas Lake offers some enchanting cabin rentals which surround this picturesque waterfront. Most of the lake property is privately owned but swimming and fishing are enjoyable activities in this area.

  • Norris Lake had humble beginnings but is not a posh, gated community with mansions commanding prices in the millions. The exquisite location which is nestled between the Tennessee Ridges and the Cumberland Gap calls to fishermen, boaters, and swimmers from all around the country. This magnificent lake has clear, deep waters which are perfect for many popular fish. The wilderness surrounding the lake is filled with glorious wildlife and enchanting flora that create an enchanting adventure for hikers and bikers.

  • Chickamauga Lake is a man-made dam which was completed in 1940. There is 810 miles of serene shoreline and the surrounding wilderness is teeming with local plants and wildlife. This grand vacation spot draws millions of visitors every year. There are two massive state parks, two county parks, four municipal parks, and two wildlife centers. Many outdoor activities are enjoyed here at Chickamauga Lake such as hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, skiing, boating, and more.

  • Reelfoot Lake is the only large lake that is natural in Tennessee. Many man-made lakes and dams comprise Tennessee but Reelfoot is authentic. This lake is mostly made up of marshes but it does have a historic, Hollywood background. The movies Raintree County, In the Heat of the Night, and U.S. Marshals were all shot at Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee.
